Wenger makes Chelsea title favourites

Arsene Wenger has labelled Chelsea as 'super-favourites' for the Premier League title after watching the leaders close in on Arsenal's record for consecutive victories.
Antonio Conte's side have opened up a six-point lead at the top of the table thanks to a superb run of 12 successive wins.
Chelsea have been perfect in the league since a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal on September 24 led to a change in formation from Blues boss Conte.
The west Londoners can consolidate pole position in this weekend's clash with Stoke and Gunners manager Wenger conceded on Friday they are firm favourites to take the title.
"At the moment Chelsea are the super-favourites because they are quite big and made a big difference," Wenger said.
"But it is theirs to lose as we say here in England. They can still lose it, at the moment they have won it but they can still lose it.
"It's still a long way to go and very difficult for everybody so the head-to-head (matches) will have a vital importance.
"They have addressed their problems well. You have to give credit to Conte to find a solution that has balanced well his team.
"They bought David Luiz who stabilised their defensive record and I think overall they are the team that has been the most consistent until now."
Arsenal won 13 consecutive Premier League games on their way to the title in 2001-02, extending the run to 14 the following campaign, but Wenger says he would do nothing but congratulate Chelsea if they match their single-season run.
"What they do is fantastic," he added. "If they do it, it's absolutely marvellous because nobody expected that.
"At the start of the season, they had a little bit of a dodgy start, but after, since they've changed their system, they are on a run where the confidence plays a big part.
"If they do it, you can only say 'well done'. Record are there to be beaten and if somebody does better than you, you have to acknowledge it and say 'well done'."

Defence to decide Reds-City showdown

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says the team that avoids making costly defensive mistakes will win Saturday's showdown with title rivals Manchester City.
Klopp's second placed side have scored 45 goals in 18 Premier League matches, while third placed City have hit the back of the net 39 times.
But both teams are less impressive at the back and Klopp believes the key to winning at Anfield this weekend will be finding a way to cut out careless errors in defence.
"I think it will be a little bit about how we protect our own attacks because both teams are pretty good on the counter-attack," Klopp said on Friday.
"Both teams are good in possession so we have to defend at our highest level. The detail will make the difference.
"It is nice to think about what you can do in the game and what you want.
"We beat them last year but we lost the League Cup final unfortunately.
"They have got better since last year but we are getting better too.
"It will be a different game to last year. We cannot play like last year, they will not play like last year."
City manager Pep Guardiola has leading scorer Sergio Aguero available for selection after a lengthy suspension.
The Argentina striker has 16 goals in all competitions and Klopp is wary of the damage he can do to Liverpool's hopes of closing the six-point gap to leaders Chelsea.
"I hope Pep gave him the opportunity to have three-and-a-half weeks off (during his suspension)," Klopp added.
"Somewhere with good weather, Argentina is good at the moment I think. He is back and a good striker, obviously.
"We have played them already and he was involved and I always thought that he is quite a talented boy, I never made a secret of it.
"Now he is back in the team with a lot of other really good players that makes life not easier for us.
"But we knew it before and even when he is not playing they are an outstanding team."

Guardiola ready to unleash Aguero

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has no qualms about unleashing Sergio Aguero against title rivals Liverpool after his suspension, while John Stones could be fit for the Anfield showdown.
Aguero is poised to return to City's starting line-up after serving a four-match ban for a dangerous lunge on Chelsea's David Luiz at the start of the month.
The 28-year-old striker was allowed to spend time back with his family in his native Argentina and Guardiola revealed he would not hesitate to throw him straight back into such a big match.
"He is ready," Guardiola explained. "He has come back good from Argentina.
"Finally he is back after the ban. And we are happy he is back."
England centre-back Stones was substituted in the first half of City's 3-0 victory over Hull on Monday after he suffered swelling in his knee.
But after being assessed by City's medical staff Guardiola remains optimistic about the 22-year-old's chances of playing against the Reds on New Year's Eve.
City captain Vincent Kompany is set to miss out with an ongoing knee problem, while winger Leroy Sane is struggling with a knock.
"John Stones is much, much better," Guardiola said. "Vincent Kompany and Leroy Sane, I think they are not available to play."
Guardiola personally scouted Liverpool on Tuesday when he attended their emphatic 4-1 victory over Stoke at Anfield.
MAJOR CHALLENGERS
He has faced Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp eight times in his managerial career while the pair were in charge of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
The Spaniard said ahead of the clash with Liverpool that with Klopp in charge they should be considered as one of the major challengers for the Premier League title.
"Yes, they are definitely a contender. It was a good game I saw," Guardiola said.
"I saw Liverpool this year many times. But it was my day off, my family was not here and I decide to take a car. Thank you Liverpool for inviting me, for the tickets. I saw the game and that's all.
"I was lucky to play before against Jurgen and I think we know each quite well.
"There are six teams fighting for the title, especially for the first four positions fighting for the next Champions League.
"I saw the contenders and they are really tough teams. So it will be a good fight until the end of the season."
Guardiola acknowledged his players must match the passion of their opponents with City winless in their last 14 league and cup games away to Liverpool.
"I don't know what will happen at Anfield. We have to equal their intensity. Anfield will play a big role," he said.
Guardiola also refused to comment on whether he believed it was possible for his City team to dominate English football in the manner of the great Liverpool teams of the 1970s and 1980s.
"What happens in the past stays in the past Manchester City is a historic club but a new club in terms of the target," he added.
"Of course City cannot compare to what Liverpool and (Manchester) United did in the last 30 or 40 years.
"We must go step by step. That is the best way to get better."

African 'wonders' now making their mark

Africa has always produced fantastic players who have gone on to make a mark in world football, showcasing their talent and making names for themselves. The likes of Rabar Madjer, Japhet N’doram, Abedi Pele, George Weah and Stephen Keshi have done great things in years past thereby drawing attention to the hoard of talent on the continent.
One can only imagine what Chelsea’s history would be without Didier Drogba, or maybe Leicester City wouldn't have lifted the English Premiership last season without the talent of Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez.
Fact to the matter is there is hardly a team that does not now feature a son with African roots, past or present, that can be considered a true powerhouse today. Just look at the top ten, and before you quickly raise your hand and ask “ well what about Argentina”, we will quickly remind you of Héctor Baley, their reserve GK at both the 1978 and 1982 World Cups had African roots and was capped 13 times.
STANDING ON THEIR SHOULDERS
Eusebio, who has Mozambican heritage, is regarded as Portugal’s greatest ever footballer after Cristiano Ronaldo because of his exploits in the 60’s.
Who can ever forget the French World Cup winning side of ‘98? It was dubbed a mini African side because of the talents within the squad that spread across several African countries. Zinedine Zidane, Patrick Vieira, Marcel Desailly, Bernard Diomede’ and Lilian Thuram were part of the side that beat Brazil to win the World Cup with Zidane the star of the show.
Other African players, who elected to play for other countries have also flourished at different levels and further put light on the continent.
The tradition continues.
OUR GREATER TOMORROW
Supersport.com takes a look at the top ten players of African descent under the age of 21 who are gradually carving a niche for themselves and raising eyebrows with their restaurant quality football skills. Despite their age, there is no doubt, th'at when we talk about the future of football when it comes to international interplay on the continent, that we will be mentioning most of their names over and over. We say this because thankfully, as we will soon read, most are bucking the trend of history where the mantra always seemed to be ‘get out of Africa’, and are choosing despite playing for clubs in Europe to play for the national teams with their African connection.
While of course there remain instances where Africa is passed over, our inventory will show you that finally the talent drain is been partially stymied and players are either staying or returning ‘home’. It is here with their ‘countries teams’ that most the young have picked to grow.
Farouk Miya
Age: 18
Nationality: Ugandan
Club: Standard Liege Belgium
Farouk Miya is the latest and unarguably the most talented player to come out of Uganda in the last five years. The teenager has already written himself into Ugandan football folklore by scoring the goal that qualified the Cranes for their first ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 32 years.
Strong on the ball and with a keen eye on the ball, the teenager is already on the books of Belgian Jupiler Liga side Standard Liege. Expect Miya to lead the line for Uganda when the AFCON kicks off in January as the Cranes look to establish themselves once again as a football giant in Africa.
Kelechi Iheanacho
Age: 19
Nationality: Nigerian
Club: Manchester City
A little over three years ago, Iheanacho was playing grass-roots football in Nigeria and had no experience of league football. All that changed after Nigeria won the Fifa U17 World Cup with the youngster emerging as the tournament’s top scorer and most valuable player.
He carried that transition to Manchester City and despite initial fears, Iheanacho as progressed rapidly at City with some scintillating displays and goals to boot. The 19-year-old has also had a break-out year with the Super Eagles netting four goals in seven international games to further cement his growing reputation as one of the best teenage footballers not only in Africa but the world.
A lot is expected from Iheanacho as Nigeria pushes for a slot at the Fifa 2018 World Cup in Russia
Moise Kean
Age: 16
Nationality: Ivorian / Italian
Club: Juventus
The Turin club has been carefully nurturing the youngster well away from the prying eyes of other football clubs. Kean is a prodigious talent who has been referred to as the ‘New Balotelli’ even though Juve will hope his career surpasses that of the man who owns the moniker.
Kean, who has Ivorian heritage smashed in goals for the Juve youth and Primavera sides breaking records along the way. Big, strong and athletic, he has been capped already by Italy at youth level and has made his Serie A debut for Juventus.
He became the first player born int he 2000’s to play in the Uefa Champions League when he made his debut for the Old Lady in a Champions League game against Lyon. Kean has not yet agreed professional terms with Juventus which has alerted the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona and Chelsea.
The prodigious 16-year-old has pledged allegiance to the Azzurri but you never know, what might happen in the future, he might just turn out for the Elephants.
Fabrice Ondoa
Age:19
Nationality: Cameroon
Club: Sevilla
Fabrice Ondoa is a product of the famous Barcelona academy, the La Masia where he was contemporaries with the likes of Munir El Haddadi and Sergi Samper. He was the first choice between the sticks for the youth team of the Barcelona who won the 2014 Uefa Youth League trophy which served notice of his potentials.
Not the tallest of goalkeepers but he makes that up with shot-stopping and positional abilities that belie his 20 years. Ondoa broke into the Cameroon senior side last year and already has an African Cup of Nations appearance under his belt. Now the undisputed number one goalkeeper for Cameroon, he will be heading to Gabon 2017 for his second Afcon appearance, an incredible achievement for a 20-year-old goalkeeper.
Adam Ounas
Age: 20
Nationality: Algerian
Club: Bordeaux
The attacking midfielder came through Bordeaux B side and made his first team debut last year and has cemented a place since then. Ounas is comfortable with the ball and has the ability to create chances for his team-mates to thrive on. He occasionally scores his own fair share of goals but his main forte is creating spaces for strikers to thrive on.
The 20 year is an exciting prospect for Bordeaux who has refused bids from some top European sides for his services. He is a very technical player who uses bags of tricks and pace to carve open opponents in Ligue 1.Capped by France at youth level, he recently switched to Algeria where his parents hail from even though his debut against Nigeria was delayed due to injury.
Alex Iwobi
Age: 20
Nationality: Nigerian /English
Club: Arsenal F.C.
Arsenal has unearthed another gem in the form of Alex Iwobi who has gone on to be an integral part of the Gunners 2016/17 campaigning after breaking into the first team last season.
A nephew to Nigeria great Jay-Jay Okocha who also played in England, the youngster has followed his famous uncle to wear the Nigerian colours despite playing for England at youth levels. A tireless runner of the ball, the 20-year-old also has the technical skills that have seen Arsenal Wenger keep faith with the youngster and handed him more responsibilities in the Arsenal squad.
He has also started Nigeria last two games int eh Fifa 2018 World Cup qualifiers and scored his first international goal against Zambia in a 2-1 away win in Zambia.A lot is expected of Iwobi as he continues to mature with the Super Eagles and Arsenal. Maybe, just maybe he might do as well as his uncle Okocha and led Nigeria to many laurels.
Keita Balde Diao
Age: 21
Nationality: Senegalese
Club: Lazio Italy
Born in Spain to Senegalese parents, Keita has come a long way from being sent home from a youth tournament by Barcelona because he pranked a team-mate by lacing his bed with ice-block. Now fully established at Serie A side Lazio, the skillful player can play as a striker, in midfield or on the wings. His versatility has made him one of the fans favorite at Lazio’s Stadio Olimpico.
The 21 year still needs to work on his discipline as he is always in the news for the wrong reasons giving many reasons to doubt if he can fulfill his talent. Keita made his Senegalese debut earlier this year and has already racked up two goals in only five games for the Teranga Lions who will rely heavily on the youngster as they push for a place in Russia 2018.
Hachim Mastour
Age: 18
Nationality: Moroccan
Club: PEC Zwolle
Mastour became the youngest ever Moroccan player to play for the national side when he made his debut last year for the Atlas Lions.
Born in Reggiana, Italy to Moroccan parents, he became an Internet sensation when clips of his game showed up online. AC Milan was quick to snap the then 14-year-old for 500,000 Euros. He never got to break into the first team despite his talent and after a loan spell at Spanish side Malaga, Mastour was farmed out to Dutch side Zwolle to continue his football education.
The attacking midfielder is a creative force in the middle of the pack with crisp dribbles and ability to find spaces in tight areas.Morocco will hope he comes good for the national side after switching allegiance from Italy whom he played for at U16 level.
Assane Gnoukouri
Age: 20
Nationality: Ivorian
Club: Inter Milan
The Ivory Coast has always produced great midfielders who have gone on to impress on the world stage. The likes of Serge Alain Maguy, Yaya Toure, Didier Zokora and Serey Die’ of recent have all continued that tradition.
Inter Milan youngster Gnoukouri might just be the man to carry the ‘midfield’ touch for the new generation. Born in Abidjan, he grew up in France but later moved to Italy in his teens. The 20 year is an attacking midfielder who can also play in a defensive midfielder role. Full of strength and running, he broke into the Inter first team last season and is tipped for great things for the Italian side.
Gnoukouri has a single cap for the Elephants but expect to see him a lot more in the coming years as one of the players to take over from Ivory Coast’s ‘golden generation’.
Rivaldo Coetzee
Age:20
Nationality: South African
Club: Ajax Cape Town
The centre back is the second youngest player ever to appear for South Africa after making his debut aged 17 in 2014 against Congo. He has since grown in stature from that rangy kid making his debut to one of the first names of the Bafana Bafana team sheet.
Coetzee is a future South Africa captain as he has shown remarkable leadership qualities on and off the field. He has already played more than 70 games for his club Ajax Cape Town at a relatively young age. Strong in the tackle, the 20 year is also impressive aerially and is likely to be a constant feature for South Africa in the coming years.
It will be a surprise if Coetzee doesn't move to Ajax Cape Town’s parent club Ajax Amsterdam or another European side in future. He is that good.

Swansea City: Paul Clement and Gary Rowett frontrunners to be manager

Swansea coach Alan Curtis believes the club's next manager needs Premier League experience
Bayern Munich assistant manager Paul Clement and former Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett are the frontrunners to be the next Swansea City manager.
Ryan Giggs was the favourite following Bob Bradley's exit on Tuesday, but the club are now looking elsewhere.
Wales boss Chris Coleman had been a contender but BBC Sport understands he is now out of the running.
Clement was interviewed for the job in the autumn before Bradley replaced former manager Francesco Guidolin.
The former Derby County manager, who was sacked by the Rams in February, is thought to have impressed the Swansea hierarchy, while Rowett has not taken on a job since his sacking by Birmingham City earlier in December.
It is understood discussions about filling the vacant manager's position are now beginning, with the club hopeful of having Bradley's replacement in place prior to the trip to Crystal Palace on 3 January.
Alan Curtis, who is taking temporary charge of the team, believes the club's next manager should be British and have experience of the Premier League.
"It has to be the right man. Ideally they would be British and know the Premier League," Curtis said.
"[The owners] have to be satisfied he fills all the criteria for getting us out of the trouble we find ourselves in."

'Fresh eyes' required

Swans legend Curtis, who is preparing for Saturday's home game with Bournemouth, says he has spoken to chairman Huw Jenkins but does not know how long he will be in charge.
"We will take it on a day by day basis," he continued.
"What the club needs is not a change of direction. The club has been the club and the way we run the club is the way that suits us.
"Somebody needs to come in with our philosophy with a little bit of experience and perhaps look at it with fresh eyes. That's exactly what it needs."

Matt Carragher: Ex-Port Vale and Wigan defender dies aged 40

Former Port Vale captain Matt Carragher has died at the age of 40, the club have confirmed.
The defender made 221 appearances for the Valiants during a six-year stay at Vale Park.
Carragher started his career with Wigan, where he played 145 games, and spent two seasons at Macclesfield.
"We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Vale captain Matt Carragher. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time," the club tweeted.
There will be a minute's applause in memory of Carragher before Vale's home game against Chesterfield on Friday

James McClean: West Bromwich Albion midfielder signs new deal until 2019

James McClean (right)
James McClean has scored 19 times in 182 league appearances for Sunderland, Wigan and West Brom
West Brom midfielder James McClean has signed a new contract committing him to the club until 2019.
The Republic of Ireland winger's deal includes an option, in the club's favour, to extend it by a further year.
McClean, 27, has had his deal confirmed six days after goalkeeper Ben Foster signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract.
"He's been a good signing for the club," Baggies head coach Tony Pulis told BBC WM.
"He's solid. He's scatty at times but he's good in the dressing room. He's a great lad to have around the place."
The midfielder signed for Albion from Wigan Athletic in June 2015 for a fee in the region of £1.5m.
Pulis said that getting both McClean and Foster to commit to the club before the opening of the January transfer window represented excellent work.
"We've got a really good spirit in the dressing room," he said. "We don't give up now."
Albion lie ninth in the Premier League, a point behind Southampton, who they visit on New Year's Eve.

Hull vs Everton Match stats

Hull City head coach Mike Phelan

TEAM NEWS

Hull have no new injury or suspension concerns for Friday night's fixture against Everton.
Forwards Abel Hernandez and Will Keane and defender Moses Odubajo remain long-term absentees.
Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg will be missing once again because of a dead leg, so Joel Robles will continue to deputise.
James McCarthy, Bryan Oviedo, Yannick Bolasie and Muhamed Besic are all still sidelined.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES

Martin Fisher: "Hull City began 2016 dreaming of a return to the Premier League; they end the year fearing an all-too-speedy return to the Championship.
"Bottom of the table, four points adrift of safety, things don't look good. Two early wins in August proved a false dawn, one victory since paints a more accurate picture of a squad lacking enough quality and sufficient depth. A few masterstrokes are needed from Mike Phelan in the transfer window.
"In the meantime, Everton arrive on the back of a morale-boosting triumph away to champions Leicester. A three-man defence worked well for Ronald Koeman, and Romelu Lukaku took his goal tally into double figures again.
"The Belgian will be licking his lips at the prospect of what might come his way at the KCOM Stadium."

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Hull head coach Mike Phelan: "At this moment in time we're looking at every option to bring players in. One of the biggest challenges for any player coming into the club is the position we're in at the moment.
"If they're courageous enough and want that challenge to either put their name out there to the clubs they're at or they want to show they are better than where they're at, then this is the club to come for that challenge.
"It has been difficult in the past to get players into the football club, but it's not impossible."
Everton manager Ronald Koeman: "I don't look to the position in the table, because I watched Hull against Manchester City. After 70 minutes it was still 0-0 and City were not creating a lot of chances.
"Also, Hull lost the game at West Ham 1-0 but they were the better team and hit the post several times.
"It's a tough one, a difficult one and we need to be at our best to get a good result."

LAWRO'S PREDICTION

Hull will dig in like they did against Manchester City, and will be hard to break down but they need a win, and I don't see them getting it.
