Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has come out of retirement, aged 41, to sign an 18-month contract with Argentinian top flight club Estudiantes.

Veron retired two years ago, but vowed to play in the 2017 Copa Libertadores if fans bought 65 per cent of the boxes at the club's new stadium.

He will donate his salary to Estudiantes.

The Argentine is also one of the club's chairmen. And an article on Estudiantes' official website confirmed that the former star will play both in the league and the Copa Libertadores, and should be involved in his first match on January 8 when the club take on Bayer Leverkusen in the Florida Cup.

Veron won the Premier League title with United during his spell in England, having come in from Lazio with a then record price tag of £28.1m in 2001.

He was sold to Chelsea for £15m two years later, but injury problems derailed his Blues career and he was left to play his football on loan at Inter and current club Estudiantes before permanently moving in 2007.

Mind you, as one Twitter user has been keen to point out, it is Argentina's version of April Fools' Day today. So let's just consider that for a second...
